In the previous article, we have already discussed what salary caps are and what are the objectives behind implementing them. We also know that there are a couple of different types of salary caps. We also know that the salary cap system is followed in almost every major league across the world.
The English Premier League, NBA, NFL, and Indian Premier League are some examples of leagues where this system is present. Over the years, this system has come under criticism many times. There are many who believe that such a system does more harm than good. Yet, in most parts of the world, the salary cap system is religiously followed by almost every sporting league. This is because there are certain advantages to following this system.
In this article, we will have a closer look at the various advantages which are associated with the salary cap system.
The objective of the salary cap is to nullify the financial advantage that some teams have over others when it comes to acquiring talent. This may seem to be going against the wealthy franchises. However, it is not. If the wealthy franchises are indeed given a free run and are allowed to corner all the resources, the end result will be one-sided games.
The presence of one-sided games is not good for viewership. This is because viewers are more attracted to thrilling games where the outcome is uncertain. Salary caps help achieve this outcome and hence are considered to be a tool that increases the overall valuation of the entire league and each individual franchise.
This uncontrolled bidding could lead to the franchise costs spiraling out of control. The end result will be that the team will win the bid for the player but may face financial ruin because of the high cost of the bid. The salary cap system is also created in order to prevent toxic competition which could jeopardize the financial future of the franchises and even the league as a whole.
Successful franchise sports teams create a system wherein they are able to consistently source youngsters with high talent and use them to surprise the rival teams and win matches. The end result of this process is that a lot of money that would have ended up in the hands of established players gets routed to lower-level sports leagues.
Sports franchises also try to develop an ecosystem that benefits them, the youngsters as well as the entire sporting community.
Now, if another franchise has to offer significantly more than the previous one, their budget may end up being negatively impacted. They may not have the money left over to retain their existing players.
In the absence of salary caps, the players might constantly switch between teams and this might impact fan loyalty and ultimately the revenue of the league.
If a franchise pays excess money to one player, they have to cut back on the compensation of other players. This will obviously not be acceptable to most players. Hence, the compensation system remains fair and sustainable in the long run.
The fact of the matter is that the salary cap system is a subject of debate all over the world. However, after weighing the pros and cons, most sporting leagues are of the opinion that the pros outweigh the cons. This is the reason that the system continues to prevail in most parts of the world.
